Oil and Gas Operator Program

Oil & Gas Operator Entry-Level Training Program (100 Hours)

This five-week hybrid training program is designed for individuals seeking entry-level skills for a career as an oil and gas operator. The program consists of 100 total hours of training:
  • 52 hours of online self-paced learning, structured with built-in assessments and required competencies. Participants must complete these competencies prior to attending in-person sessions.
  • 48 hours of in-person instruction, conducted during Weeks 2-5 at the Bakken Area Skills Center Facility located in Watford City ND, with dedicated learning lab days and industry site visits.

Training Schedule & Format

  • Sessions & Dates:
    • Session 1: March 10 – April 11
    • Session 2: May 19 – June 20
  • Learning Lab Days:
    • Session 1: March 11, March 21, March 28, April 4, and April 11
    • Session 2: May 19, May 29, June 5, June 12, and June 19
  • Training Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Industry Tours: When scheduled, transportation will be provided for participants.
  • Lunch: Participants must bring their own lunch.

  • Safety/LOTO/JSA
  • Compressors
  • P&IDs/MOC
  • Instrumentation & Control
  • Gas Processing Plant Operations
  • Vapor Recovery Units
  • Residual Knockouts/Flares
  • Lact Units/Pigging
  • Well Site Operations
  • Artificial Lift

Earn Prior Learning Credit Toward a Degree

Participants who successfully complete this training program will be eligible to earn prior learning credit toward:
  • ENRT 100 Operations, Safety, and Environment (4 credits)
  • PROD 110 Fundamentals of the Petroleum Industry (4 credits)

Site Visit & PPE Requirements

Participants must have the following PPE for site visits:
  • Safety Shoes
  • Safety Glasses
  • Hard Hats
  • Fire-Resistant Clothing (FRC)
  • Ear Plugs
  • Gloves

Cost

  • $1,800 per person
This blended learning approach ensures participants gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, making them well-prepared for entry-level roles in the oil and gas industry while also providing a pathway to further education.

Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act through the North Dakota Department of Commerce.
